Mitigating the Impact of Implicit Bias

The potential impact of implicit bias on discrimination is a major challenge for proponents of racial equality. If bias is hidden, difficult to control, or unconscious, then how can its impact be mitigated? In this talk, I will review research from my lab examining three approaches to combatting the effects of implicit bias. First, I will describe interventions to reduce implicit intergroup biases with a meta-analysis of almost 500 studies and experiments on over 20,000 people. Second, I discuss diversity trainings that educate about bias, with a focus on a field study of 3,764 police officers. Finally, I will discuss the promises and pitfalls of structural and procedural interventions to prevent racial discrimination in decision-making.
