"Hierarchy, Moral Emotion, and Human Sociality"

Abstract:
In this talk, I will detail the latest evidence regarding the emergence and function of 3 emotions that enable individuals to transcend self-interest and integrate into social collectives. Those emotions are compassion, awe, and gratitude, and the study of their evolution and neurophysiology tells a great deal about human prosociality.  I then will detail how forms of hierarchy -- social class and economic inequality in particular -- undermine the role of these emotions in human social groups.
