Event Description

"Monoracials’ Categorization of Multiracials: A Hierarchy- and Group- Maintenance Perspective"

Abstract:
In this talk, I synthesize emerging research on why monoracials across the American racial status hierarchy include or exclude multiracials with shared racial heritage from their monoracial ingroup. I highlight how monoracials’ preferences for intergroup hierarchy (v. equality) and concerns about multiracials’ group allegiances affect their categorization of multiracials. Furthermore, I discuss how a social perceiver’s racial group status can influence which socio-political predictors of categorization are most relevant, and consider implications for monoracial-multiracial intergroup relations.
